Post-Baccalaureate Initial Teacher Certification Program
Please Note:Please read all information listed below thoroughly before calling about the program or requesting an appointment. Thank you.
The Post-Baccalaureate Program is for students who hold a bachelors degree or above and wish to obtain a teaching certificate. This one year commitment includes both face to face instruction, as well as online course work. Cohorts typically meet once every other week, while concurrently completing assignments via educational, interactive websites; meetings are scheduled in the evenings. During their last semester, participants will perform a three week practicum and a seventeen week internship in a classroom that corresponds to their chosen content area. Each course completed earns students Professional Learning Unit (PLU) credits, not including classes taken for additional content purposes.
New cohorts begin in February of each year.
The program itinerary lists all classes participants will complete. Program Itinerary
Choosing A Content Area
Initial teacher certification is offered through the Post-Baccalaureate program in all middle grades and secondary education areas, EXCLUDING SPECIAL EDUCATION AND EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION.
As determined by the Professional Standards Commission (PSC), one must select a teaching field that correlates to his or her degree; in order to access this information, please visit http://www.gapsc.com/Application/majorsandfields.pdf.
If content area that corresponds with degree conferred is selected, then NO transcript evaluation is necessary.
If one chooses a teaching field that does not correspond to his or her degree(s), the following two options remain available:
- Obtain initial certification in a teaching field matched to degree obtained; then, take and pass the GACE Content Area Exam for content area of choice.
- Have transcripts reviewed and complete additional courses in desired content area, prior to entering the program.
Internship
Students will submit their top three preferences for Internship placement when completing their Internship Application. The Field Placement Coordinator will make placement requests to area school systems. Every effort is made to plan your internship in a school within 40 miles of your residence.
Cost
This program is non-degree seeking and only allows individuals to obtain a teaching certificate; therefore, GOVERNMENT FINANCIAL AID IS NOT AVAILABLE. (Credit is earned as Professional Learning Units approved by the Georgia Department of Education.)
Please Note:Government funding includes any money, grant, student loan, etc. acquired as a result of completing the FAFSA.
The total cost of $7,000.00 includes course, technology, the assessment management system (LiveText), and book fees.
