School of Education:

North Georgia offers undergraduate programs in Early Childhood/Special Education (Grades P-5th), Middle Grades (4th-8th), Secondary (grades 6-12) fields of English, History, Math, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and programs leading to P-12 certification in Art, Music and Physical Education.    More details on the Teacher Education Programs are available in our Undergraduate Bulletin).

  • Early Childhood / Special Education (P-5) Program

The program  offers a dual major in early childhood and special education, preparing students to work in both fields in grades P-5.  The junior and senior years of the program are conducted in selected schools, requiring full-year clinical placements that also include academic course work. (See Degree Maps and Plans of Study for ECE Program)

  • Middle Grades (4-8) Program

The Middle level program prepares students to work in grades 4-8.  Middle Grades students select two teaching field concentrations (Math, Science, Social Studies, or Language Arts).  All middle grades cohorts begin in the fall semester.  During the fall placement of the senior year, students are assigned to selected area schools and expected to attend preplanning along with the classroom teachers.  (See Degree Maps and Plans of Study for program)

NEW students admitted to program Fall 2012!

Professional Development School Program for Fall 2012

The important thing for all students considering teacher education to understand is that they will be involved as professionals in public school service from the beginning of their programs. Students do not select the school placements that they want- this is a condition of accreditation.  Students are assigned to placements by the field placement office to ensure that the placements meet all of the requirements for their programs as outlined by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and NCATE. The student's place of residence is taken into consideration when possible to help limit their travel time.

A Professional Development School (PDS) Program involves full day, full year teaching and learning experiences for North Georgia students and faculty at a partner school.  Ideally, these experiences are completely integrated with the professional development program at the PDS so that North Georgia students and faculty study together with PDS teachers in a collaborative and supportive environment.  Click Here for more information

NEW Field Experience Requirements:

In order to develop a more meaningful experience for the students and to assess their readiness for the School of Education expectations, we will be having the students complete a field experience in their major area.  This experience will consist of 30 hours in a variety of settings.

Early Childhood/Special Education students will be assigned to preschools, and middle and secondary students (with the exception of Art) are assigned to tutor students in their content areas in Dawson or Lumpkin middle or high schools. Art Ed students are assigned to work with Chris Dockery in the ArtStream project-which provides rural communities with access to arts activities.

Middle Grades and Secondary majors, including Music majors will provide tutoring in middle and secondary schools.

ATTENTION

Effective Spring 2010, The University System of Georgia (USG) institutions are no longer accepting any of the following courses to fulfill the course requirement in Area F for Education majors:
